String theory is a way of looking at the universe that suggests that everything, from the smallest particles to the biggest galaxies, is made up of tiny strings of energy that vibrate in different ways. Imagine a guitar string – when you pluck it, it vibrates and makes a sound. Every particle in the universe is like a tiny guitar string, except instead of making sound, it makes matter and energy. An example of string theory is that we can think of a particle as a tiny vibrating string, and the frequency of the vibration determines the particle’s mass.
