gravitational wave
Gravitational waves are like ripples in a pond. They are created when two massive objects, such as black holes, move around each other. The waves spread out from the source and travel through space, like a wave in a pond travels across the surface of the water. We can’t see these waves with our eyes, but scientists have found ways to detect them. To detect a gravitational wave scientists use special instruments called detectors. The detectors are very sensitive and can pick up the tiny vibrations caused by the waves. Just like a wave in a pond, the farther away the wave gets, the smaller it gets. When the wave reaches us, it’s so small that it’s hard to detect. Fun Fact: In 2016, scientists detected a gravitational wave for the first time ever! It was created by two black holes colliding 1.3 billion years ago.
