The Filipino American vs Japanese war was a conflict between the United States and Japan during World War II. It lasted from December 1941 until Japan’s surrender in August 1945. During this time, the Philippines was occupied by Japanese forces, and Filipino Americans fought alongside American forces to free the Philippines from Japanese rule. One of the biggest battles of this war was the Battle of Leyte Gulf, which was fought between October 23 and October 25, 1944. During the battle, the Japanese navy was defeated by the American and Filipino forces, and this victory helped the Allies gain control of the Pacific Ocean. An example of the bravery of Filipino Americans during the war was during the Battle of Bataan, which was fought between January and April 1942. A Filipino American unit, the Philippine Scouts, was the last to stand against the Japanese forces and they held their ground until they were forced to surrender. Another example of the bravery of Filipino Americans during the war was the bravery of Private First Class Jose Calugas. Private Calugas was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, where he single-handedly destroyed two Japanese machine gun nests.
